Over the years the Evelina London Children’s Sleep Medicine Clinic has seen parents struggle with using paper and spreadsheet sleep diaries. When RMA learned about the plans of Paul Gringras- Professor of Children’s Sleep and Neurodisability at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital – to help more parents with sleep-deprived children, we knew we could help. Working closely with Paul we set out to create an innovative sleep app, unlike any other. A great project to add to our portfolio of Pro Bono work.
Studies show that around 20% of children have sleep problems that their parents find hard to deal with. Our goal was to create a highly functional app to help parents manage this problem.
What we did
Built on a foundation of sound clinical research and feedback from the hundreds of patients who have visited the sleep clinic we created Kids Sleep Dr. It’s a free app that allows parents to easily track and understand their child’s sleep patterns, compare them with other children of a similar age and share summary reports with anyone they choose. More than just a sleep diary, the app also provides specific ‘sleep tips’ tailored to their child’s age and sleep patterns.
Research shows that most apps emit so-called blue enriched light, which can slow the onset of sleep. Not wanting to fuel the sleep problems we developed a unique ‘sleep-aware’ colour palette – a feature we’ve yet to see adopted by other sleep related apps. Another innovative feature is the ‘finger-painting’ method of data capture. Parents simply glide their finger over the diary to quickly enter details of their child’s sleep patterns.
Created for newborns right up to 16 year olds Kids Sleep Dr covers an age range not offered by any other sleep apps.
How it helped
With 14,000 downloads after just a few days on the App Store Kids Sleep Dr is now helping parents around the world. Endorsements from Prof Tanya Byron (Clinical Psychologist, journalist, broadcaster, author and government advisor) and Sam Sims (Founder of Up All Hours, the parenting platform) also underpin the potential for this free app to make a significant difference to families dealing with children who have sleep problems.
